Mosquito Bay, Vieques — Where the Water Glows Blue at Night
Imagine gliding through still, dark water and watching the ocean come alive with brilliant blue light beneath every stroke of a paddle. That's Mosquito Bay on Vieques island — recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's brightest bioluminescent bay.
The glow comes from billions of microscopic dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense) — single-celled organisms that emit bioluminescent light when disturbed by movement. The enclosed bay, surrounded by mangroves, creates the ideal conditions for these organisms to thrive in extraordinary concentrations.
The most remarkable way to experience Mosquito Bay is as part of a private overnight boat charter from Fajardo to Vieques — sailing over at sunset, exploring the island by day, and kayaking the glowing bay after dark under a starlit sky.
Three factors make Mosquito Bay uniquely spectacular among the world's 68 known bioluminescent bays.
Puerto Rico is one of the few places in the world with multiple bioluminescent bays — and it has three of them.
Guinness World Record holder for the world's brightest bioluminescent bay. The most spectacular bio bay experience in Puerto Rico — accessed by kayak or electric boat tour. Requires overnight stay or charter to Vieques.
A bioluminescent lagoon inside the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, just minutes from Marina Puerto del Rey. Accessed by kayak tour at night. Much dimmer than Mosquito Bay but more easily accessible from Fajardo hotels.
A bioluminescent bay on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico near La Parguera fishing village. Boat tours available locally. Note that a channel was dredged in the 1960s which partially reduced the glow — it's less bright than Mosquito Bay and Laguna Grande.
The ultimate Vieques experience: sail over, explore the island, and kayak the glowing bay at night. Return in the morning refreshed.
Choose between a day trip to Vieques or the full overnight charter experience.
