Vieques is a laid-back island off Puerto Rico's east coast, known for two things you won't find almost anywhere else: wild horses that roam freely across the island, including right along the beaches, and Mosquito Bay — one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world, where the water itself glows blue-green when disturbed on a dark night.
Compared to the mainland, Vieques moves slower — fewer crowds, quieter beaches, and a real sense of being somewhere different, even though it's only a short hop from Fajardo.
Mosquito Bay is Vieques' signature attraction — a bay dense with bioluminescent microorganisms that glow blue-green whenever the water is disturbed, whether by a paddle, a fish, or your hand. It's best experienced on a dark, moonless night, away from artificial light, when the glow is at its most visible.
Vieques' best-known beaches include Playa Caracas (also called Red Beach) and Media Luna, both known for calm, clear water and noticeably lighter crowds than beaches on the mainland. It's common to see wild horses grazing right along the sand — they roam freely across much of the island and are one of Vieques' most photographed sights.
