Punta Arenas is one of the more remote beaches on Vieques — a stretch of coastline that's part of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, the protected land created after the U.S. Navy withdrew from the island in 2003. That refuge status is exactly why it stays undeveloped: no beach bars, no vendors, no crowds — just reef, sand, and mangrove coastline.
The reef here is known for vibrant coral and good underwater visibility, with calm, shallow sections in places — reported depths commonly run from around 3 to 18 feet, which makes stretches of it comfortable for a range of snorkeling experience levels. Visitors regularly report sea turtle sightings along with a wide variety of reef fish. Nearby, the Laguna Kiani mangrove system adds another layer of marine habitat to the area.
