How Much Does a Boat Charter Cost in Puerto Rico?

Q: What is included in a Puerto Rico boat charter?

At Boating Puerto Rico, every charter includes a licensed captain and mate, fuel, ice, water, sodas, domestic beer, fresh fruit, snacks, sandwiches or wraps, a floating mat, and Bluetooth music. Snorkel gear is available on request. You do not pay extra for these essentials — the quoted price is the total price.

Q: How many people can go on a boat charter in Puerto Rico?

Our vessels range from intimate boats suitable for 2 to 8 guests up to larger yachts that accommodate 12 to 20 passengers. The per-person cost decreases significantly as your group size increases, making larger charters excellent value for parties, family reunions, and corporate events. Contact us to match the right vessel to your group size.

Q: Is it cheaper to take the ferry to Culebra instead of a charter?

The public ferry to Culebra from Ceiba costs around $4 to $5 per person each way. For a group of 8 people, that is under $100 in ferry fares. However, when you add rental cars on Culebra, food and drinks for the day, activities, and the 2 to 4 hours lost waiting in line, the total cost climbs significantly — and you still don't get a private boat, a dedicated crew, or the flexibility to stop where you want. A private charter delivers a fundamentally different experience.

Q: When is the best time to book a boat charter in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico charters are available year-round. Peak season runs from December through April when demand is highest and advance booking of 2 to 4 weeks is recommended. Summer (June through August) and shoulder months (May, September to November) often have more availability and can offer slightly better pricing. Weekend dates fill faster than weekdays regardless of season.

The most common question we get from first-time charter guests is some version of: how much is this going to cost? It is a fair question, and we are going to answer it honestly — with actual numbers, not vague "contact us for pricing" non-answers.

Private boat charter prices in Puerto Rico vary based on vessel size, trip duration, group size, destination, and season. Below is a complete breakdown of every factor that affects your final quote, what is typically included, what costs extra, and how to make sure you are getting real value.

What Affects the Price?

Vessel Size and Type

Boat size is the largest single driver of charter cost. A center-console sportfisher for 6 guests costs significantly less than a 48-foot yacht with a salon, full galley, and multiple sleeping cabins. Larger boats require more fuel, more crew, and carry larger insurance costs — all of which affect the daily rate. When you request a quote, we match you to the right vessel for your group size so you are never paying for more boat than you need.

Group Size

Most charter quotes are per-vessel, not per-person. This means the cost per person drops significantly as your group grows. A 4-hour charter for 2 people costs each person far more than the same boat split among 8 or 10 guests. If you are traveling with a larger group — a bachelor or bachelorette party, a family reunion, a corporate outing — private charter becomes extremely competitive on a per-person basis compared to booking individual resort excursions.

Duration

Longer charters cost more in absolute terms but typically have a better per-hour rate than short charters. A 4-hour charter might be $700, while an 8-hour charter on the same vessel might be $1,500 — you double the time for significantly less than double the cost. For destinations like Culebra or Vieques, which require 60 to 80 minutes of travel each way, the 8-hour charter is the only way to get meaningful time at the destination without feeling rushed.

Destination

Closer destinations like Icacos Cay and Palomino Island are accessible on shorter charters. Culebra and Vieques require 6 to 8 hours minimum to make the round trip worth the crossing. The U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John) are available on multi-day overnight charters and involve customs clearance. Your destination choice drives the minimum charter duration, which in turn affects the cost.

Season and Demand

Puerto Rico's peak charter season runs December through April, when demand from U.S. winter travelers is highest and weekend dates fill weeks in advance. Shoulder season (May, October, November) and summer months (June through August) tend to have better availability. Pricing is generally consistent year-round from established operators, but spontaneous last-minute requests in peak season may face limited availability or premium pricing.

Included vs Extra

What Is Included vs. Extra?

The biggest point of confusion when comparing charter prices is that operators bundle inclusions differently. Some quote a bare rate and add food, drinks, and fuel separately. We include everything material in our flat rate. Here is the breakdown:

Item	Boating Puerto Rico	Typical Budget Operator
Licensed captain	Included	Included
Mate / deckhand	Included	Often extra
Fuel	Included	Often extra
Ice, water, sodas	Included	Extra or bring your own
Domestic beer	Included	Extra
Snacks and fresh fruit	Included	Extra
Sandwiches / wraps	Included	Extra
Floating mat	Included	Often extra
Bluetooth music	Included	Varies
Premium liquor	Add-on available	Extra
Fishing gear	Add-on available	Extra

Real Numbers

The Real Value: Charter vs. DIY Island Day

Let us run the honest numbers on a group of 8 people spending a day at Culebra, comparing a private charter to the public ferry option.

DIY Culebra Day (8 People — Public Ferry Option)

Public ferry tickets ($9 round trip x 8)$72

Golf cart rental on Culebra (2 carts x $60)$120

Food and drinks for 8 people (lunch + snacks)$320

Snorkel gear rental (8 people)$120

Drive to Ceiba + parking$40

Time waiting in ferry line (2-4 hrs)Priceless (not in a good way)

Total estimated cost~$672

Private Charter to Culebra (8 People — 8-Hour Charter)

Charter rate (all-inclusive)$1,500–$2,000

Food, drinks, snacks, beerIncluded

Snorkel gearIncluded

Captain and mateIncluded

FuelIncluded

Per person (8 guests)~$188–$250

The difference in per-person cost is real but much smaller than most people expect — especially once you account for everything that is included. And the experience difference is dramatic. On the charter, you choose where you anchor, you stop at Icacos on the way, you have music and cold drinks and a dedicated crew. On the ferry, you wait in line, then wait in line again to come back, and navigate logistics on the island yourself.

Tips to Get the Best Value

Book as a group. Charter pricing is per-vessel, not per-person. Split among 8 to 12 guests, even a premium charter becomes an excellent value per person. Coordinate with friends and family to fill the boat.
Choose a weekday. Weekend dates book faster and have more demand. Tuesday through Thursday charters can sometimes offer better availability, particularly in shoulder season.
Book in advance during peak season. December through April is our busiest window. Booking 2 to 4 weeks out ensures you get the vessel you want on the date you want. Last-minute requests in peak season often face limited options.
Be clear about your priorities. If your main goal is snorkeling, a shorter charter to Icacos may serve you better and at lower cost than a longer Culebra trip. Tell us what matters most and we will help you maximize the experience within your budget.
Ask what is included. Always confirm whether fuel, food, drinks, and crew gratuity are included in the quoted price before comparing operators. A lower headline price with numerous extras can end up costing more than an all-inclusive rate.
