Puerto Rico is charterable year-round — that’s one of the biggest advantages of being 18 degrees north of the equator. But not every month is equal. Wind, swell, rain, and visibility vary enough that the month you book can meaningfully change your experience.
This guide is written by captains who have been running private charters from Fajardo since 1995. Here’s the honest breakdown, month by month.
The Short Answer
Best months overall: December through April. Calm trade winds, low humidity, minimal rain, and the clearest water you’ll find in the Caribbean. If you can only come once and you want the best possible day on the water, this is your window.
Second tier: May through July. Sea conditions are typically flat, especially in the morning. Heat picks up, and afternoon rain showers are common, but they usually pass in 20 minutes. Still excellent for chartering.
Plan carefully: August through November. Hurricane season. Most days are still fine — but this period requires flexible booking and willingness to reschedule. Late September and October are statistically the highest-risk weeks.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
What About Water Clarity?
The clearest water at Icacos and Palomino is during the winter months — December through April. Trade winds keep the surface clean, runoff from Puerto Rico is minimal, and visibility can exceed 80 feet at the reef. Summer is still beautiful but afternoon thunderstorms can churn up sediment near shore temporarily.
Does Weather Affect the Prices?
Boat charter pricing at Boating Puerto Rico is fixed by vessel and duration, not season. What changes is availability — December through April books up faster, especially on weekends. If you have a specific date in mind, especially a weekend, book 2–4 weeks out minimum. Mid-week bookings are almost always available on short notice.
One Captain’s Recommendation
If you have flexibility, late January or early February is our personal favorite time of year on the water. The trade winds are blowing steady from the northeast, the visibility at the reef is exceptional, and the light in the afternoon is unlike anything else in the Caribbean. That said, we’ve had perfect days in August too. Puerto Rico rarely disappoints.
