When to See What in Puerto Rico Waters

🐋
Humpback Whales
Peak: January–March. Humpback whales use the Mona Passage — between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic — as a winter breeding and calving ground. While the main concentrations are off the west coast near Rincón, whales are occasionally spotted during offshore passages around Fajardo. The best way to maximize wildlife sightings is a private overnight or multi-day charter.
🐬
Spinner & Bottlenose Dolphins
Year-round, most active April–August. Pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins are regularly encountered around Culebra, Vieques, and the offshore islands near Fajardo. Our captains know where to look. Dolphin encounters are one of the highlights guests mention most in their reviews — and they're completely wild.
🐢
Sea Turtles
Nesting May–October; hatchlings August–October. Leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles nest on Puerto Rico's beaches. Swimmers regularly encounter turtles at Palomino Island, Culebra reefs, and the waters around Culebrita. Snorkeling near sea turtles is one of the most memorable charter experiences — completely wild and legal to observe at a respectful distance.
Bioluminescent Bay
Year-round — best in summer on moonless nights. Mosquito Bay in Vieques holds the title of world's brightest bioluminescent bay (Guinness World Record). The dinoflagellates that produce the glow are most spectacular in summer months and on nights with no moon. Private charter to Vieques available for overnight and multi-day trips.
Charter Conditions

Best Time for Boat Charters & Snorkeling

Sea conditions matter enormously for charter quality — especially for trips to Culebra, Vieques, and the USVI. Here's what our captains observe throughout the year.

May–August (Best)
Trade winds lighten to 10–15 knots. Seas 1–3 feet in most areas. Underwater visibility 60–100 feet at top snorkeling spots. Crossings to Culebra, Vieques, and USVI at their most comfortable. Most first-timers and families should aim for this window.
December–April (Very Good)
Beautiful weather but trade winds stronger (15–25 knots). Seas 3–5 feet in open passages. Choppy crossings possible — most guests are fine but sensitive guests may feel it. Great snorkeling visibility. Best overall weather even if seas are livelier.
September–October (Caution)
Hurricane season peak. We operate but monitor conditions carefully. Some weeks are perfectly beautiful; others have swell and weather systems. Recommend flexible dates and trip insurance. Not ideal for families or first-timers.
FAQ

Puerto Rico Timing Questions

What is the best time to visit Puerto Rico?
December through April for the best overall weather (dry season). May through August for the calmest seas and best snorkeling conditions. April and May are ideal for combining both — good weather, calm water, fewer crowds, and better prices than peak winter season.
When should I avoid visiting Puerto Rico?
September and October carry the highest hurricane risk and are the least predictable months. If your dates are inflexible, travel insurance is essential. Most years see no major storms, but the uncertainty can disrupt travel plans. These months also have the highest humidity.
When is the best time for snorkeling in Puerto Rico?
May through August. Seas are calmest, underwater visibility is highest (often 60–100 feet at prime spots), and water temperature is warmest. Turtle encounters are also most common during this period.
When can I see humpback whales in Puerto Rico?
Humpback whales migrate through Puerto Rico's Mona Passage from January through March. The best viewing is off the west coast near Rincón. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are present year-round near the Fajardo-area offshore islands.
What is the cheapest month to visit Puerto Rico?
September is the cheapest month, followed by October and early November. Low demand during hurricane season means hotels and flights are heavily discounted. Charter availability is also highest. The trade-off is weather unpredictability.
Should I book a boat charter in December or January?
Yes — both months offer beautiful weather and are popular for charters. December and January have stronger trade winds (15–25 knots) that can make open-ocean crossings to Culebra and Vieques choppier. Most guests are fine; if you're concerned about seasickness, aim for May–August when seas are calmer. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for holiday weeks.
